I haven't tried playing a melee type of character yet, but I intend to play a female, Sledge-wielding fury the second time around!

yeah my guy right now is a big melee beast. but dont get a sword a sledge is more powerful.

the weapons i'm using is the supersledge and the ripper (kinda like a chainsaw knife). you can find the ripper by killin the bug lady at canterbury commons. i think its damage is like 26 or somethin like that.

I'm on my second play through right now, and I'm going melee + small guns as back up.
Melee is really fun. It makes you think more about tactics too, considering you have to sneak around more.

my guy is currently a melee/gun user.  for tight quarters i use either my sledge hammer or chinese officer's sword. for long range i use my hunting rifle, assault rifle, and sub machinegun

I only did melee during the first gameplay hours... just to save up ammo... if I were to carry it on during the whole game I would totally use the slegde baby!

If you're going melee, it's Ripper all the way!  So much fun...

The ripper is awesome.
I stole a few from those freaks in Andale.

But with melee how are you supposed to snipe someone on the roof???
You'll have to go all the way up the steps and risk getting shot at A LOT.
I like that laser rifle.
ITS soooo pretty.

If your melee i really recomend using ripper they are AWESOME way better than a sledge go to andale and kill everyone but the old man and you'll find rippers

i went small guns/melee, sniper rifle/scoped 44. magnum for clearing those "oh" areas, before bashing up the place with the supersledge. You can get your hand on a rather nice super sledge in vault 87 (if i remember correctly). Used melee for most of my end-game playing. Pure awesomeness.

There are some HUGE disadvantages to melee, IMO, which is why you need some back-up guns. Like if you get caught, you get shot a lot more :p

you can often position yourself accordingly, forcing them to come to you, and if you do so correctly, the first thing the enemy will meet when he crosses the corner you ran behind, is a funking bash to the head. But yeah, very handy to have some small guns + or explosives / mines to rig up your own little playground. I love the tactical aspect of fallout 3. Orchestrate everything

I never melee.. I find it so ridiculous that when you're ripping someone's chest apart the mutant still stands there firing off missiles at you while you're keeping less than 3 feet of distance! I learned my lesson allright.. I usually sell all melee weapons.

Melee characters are harder to do. Usually you have to have another skill to deal with longer distance opponents in addition to your melee, and that usually will kill most people before you can get close enough to engage them. Otherwise you're going to go through a load of stim packs and whatnot just from trying to close with your target.

I tried explosives/melee as a combo, but it's annoying if you're using VATS and throwing a grenade, quite often your target will close with you, so when you target, the guy or gal is 10 or 15 feet away...when you actually throw, dude or dudette is standing right in front of you, and you're blasting the crap out of yourself and your followers.

Then I got moderately good at small guns, and would run up to people targeting their weapon arms. A few shots cripples them, then run up and start smashing 'em in the skull.
After a while though, I was like, why waste time trying to close the gap when i could just squeeze off another shot and be done with it?

Shishkebob is the best melee weapon, though melee/unarmed seem to be better as back-ups rather than your main martial skill. Good way to save ammo, what?
