He's on the section of the ship that has disconnected from the larger body. While on the dock (where the main Rivet City sign is), walk towards the right end of the ship. You should see a makeshift bridge out to a door; this is Pinkerton's place.

Now my question: how do you get in?

Is the door locked or something?

SPOILER: Pinkerton can be found in the broken-off bow of the ship. There are two ways in: the door in the side of the ship (you need Lockpick skill of 100% to go that way), and through an underwater tunnel. The tunnel is in the break, just around the corner from the door.

LMAO... Cheesy

Found him last night... stole one of the skill books he has on his desk, and started a fight.  Nailed him in the head with a railway spike, and it.... knocked him unconscious?!?  Wierd.  Good thing though because after talking with him and then EVERYONE in Rivet City, I had to talk to him again to get the complete history of the town.

sweet tip on the tunnel, hadn't noticed that - was just gonna go back with my 100 lockpick skill

yeah pinkerton is a very important NPC for completing the main quest so i guess that is one of the built in protection systems they have to prevent you from not being able to finish the game.

you lucky fella!

keep fighting the good fight  Wink

In response to Mighty-Quinn I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. You do not need Pinkerton at all to "finish" the game (main quest). I've finished it twice now and never did the android quest until now.

He's usually in the broken bow of the ship swim out in the water roughlt where the ship is broken in half go under water and you'll see an under water door head through that and into the ship, you'll have to fight off a few mirelurks but you'll eventually find him in his lab, by the way there are a few booby traps before you get to him so watch out make sure to look around before touching anything.

Also the room you enter if you swim, is filled with gas.
So no laser fire or shishkabobbing the Mirelurks.

I went in the side door, from the dock.
Pick the lock, disarm 2 mines, 2 shotguns, and that's it.
You don't even see a Mirelurk, unless you hang around.
Right as you enter though, grab the scoped .44 and lots of ammo
in that first room.

Pinkerton is actually necessary for 2 side quests, I found him
for the Wasteland Survival Guide, and then after finishing
that proceeded to question him on The Replicated Man.
